Para la niña que nunca fue/For the Girl that Never Was

98 x 72 x 75 in, Mixed-media installation including plywood, paint, gems, upcycled fabric, sourced objects, frames, candles and fresh flowers. 2024

My ofrenda seeks to create a dialogue about the experience of growing up as a Latin American girl while trying to break out from the expectations of family, friends, and society. The loss of innocence and the loss of girlhood. Grieving the performance of being a woman. Grieving a version of myself that never really existed but was expected. I am performing that escape route to provide others with materials for their own paths forward. Maturity implies loss and grief. I pay homage to that process: Para la niña que nunca fue, liberates the other possible journeys and fulfilling ways to become a Woman.
